MAN D20 Typical faults, recommendations for prevention:

🔧 1. Coking of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system

Symptoms: power loss, black smoke, sensor errors.

Cause: soot and deposits in the EGR valve and pipeline.

Prevention:

  • Use high-quality fuel.
  • Regularly clean the EGR system (every 100-150 thousand km).
  • Monitor the serviceability of the turbine and intake system.

🔧 2. Wear or seizure of the turbocharger

Symptoms: loss of power, whistling or humming, oil consumption.

Cause: poor lubrication, overheating, contamination.

Prevention:

  • Change oil and filters strictly according to the regulations.
  • Warm up and cool the engine before/after the trip.
  • Monitor the tightness of the intake and pipes.

🔧 3. Increased oil consumption

Symptoms: constant topping up of oil.

Cause: wear of oil scraper rings, valves, turbine.

Prevention:

  • Use original or approved oils.
  • Monitor compression and crankcase ventilation.
  • Monitor the condition of the turbine.

🔧 4. Problems with the Common Rail system

Symptoms: uneven operation, injector errors, difficult starting.

Cause: fuel contamination, wear of injectors and fuel injection pump.

Prevention:

  • Change fuel filters every 60–80 thousand km.
  • Use fuel with low sulfur content.
  • Check injectors and rail pressure during diagnostics.

🔧 5. Cracks in the cylinder head

Symptoms: overheating, pressure in the expansion tank, coolant leak.

Cause: overheating, factory defect, excessive load.

Prevention:

  • Monitor the coolant temperature.
  • Do not overload the engine, especially in hot weather.
  • Change the antifreeze according to the regulations, use high-quality.

🔧 6. Wear of camshafts and rockers

Symptoms: extraneous sounds in the cylinder head, unstable operation.

Cause: poor lubrication, exceeding maintenance intervals.

Prevention:

  • Use original oil and filters.
  • Check valve clearances and timing belt condition.

🔧 7. Wiring and ECU problems

Symptoms: spontaneous errors, broken connection with units.

Cause: vibrations, moisture, age.

Prevention:

  • Check and clean the ECU connectors and sensors.
  • Avoid washing the engine under high pressure.
