MAN B&W S50ME Typical Problems
1. 🔧 Unstable idle / RPM fluctuations
Causes:
Errors in fuel injection adjustment
Faulty Alpha (ELFI/ELVA) servomotors
Pressure in the control oil system is outside the normal range
Solution:
- Check the calibration of the ME-Engine electronic control
- Diagnose the injection system and valve operation
2. 💨 Increased smoke (white or blue smoke)
Causes:
Insufficient combustion chamber temperature
Problems with fuel supply (non-working injector)
Worn piston rings or valve guides
Solution:
- Check injection time and volume
- Diagnose injectors and cylinder tightness
- Analysis of exhaust and temperatures by cylinders
3. ⚙️ Wear of cylinders and pistons
Causes:
Incorrect operation of the system cylinder lubrication
Using the wrong cylinder oil
Violation of temperature conditions
Solution:
- Check the Cylinder Lubricator (Alpha Lubricator) supply
- Select the correct viscosity and TBN of the oil
- Conduct regular endoscope inspection of the cylinders
4. 🛢️ Problems with the lubrication system
Symptoms:
Loss of oil pressure
Dirty filters
Low level signals
Causes:
- Worn oil pump
- Leaks or internal clearances
- Dirty oil separator or heat exchanger
5. 🧠 Electronic control system (ME) errors
Causes:
Failures of pressure, temperature, position sensors
CAN bus or controller (MCU, SFOC Module) failures
Poor contact or corrosion in connectors
DTC errors:
- FIVA Position Sensor Fault
- ELFI Position Deviation
- Hydraulic Oil Pressure Low
Solution:
- Diagnostics via ME-Visual or MAN CEON
- Check all sensors and hydraulic control system
6. 🌀 Turbocharging malfunctions
Causes:
Turbocharger contamination
Valve control actuator malfunction
Exhaust gas flow malfunction (clogging)
Solution:
- Cleaning turbine and pipelines
- Check actuator and servo drives
- Analysis of back pressure in the exhaust system
