Scania Marine Engines Workshop Manual. Electrical System

A comprehensive service and electrical manual for Scania marine diesel engines. Includes step-by-step instructions for diagnostics, disassembly, repair and assembly of DI09, DI13, DI16 Engines adapted for marine conditions. Cooling, lubrication, fuel supply, turbocharging systems and electronic control modules (EMS, EEC3/EEC4) are described in detail. Wiring diagrams, connection diagrams and checkpoints enable efficient troubleshooting on board. The manual is intended for ship engineers, ship repair companies and technicians servicing a fleet with Scania engines.

The most problematic Scania marine engines:

1. DI13 (DC13 Marine) - early versions with EGR and SCR

Problems:

  • Frequent EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system failures:
  • Valve coking
  • EGR cooler overheating
  • Unstable operation of the SCR (AdBlue) system:
  • Crystallization in the dispenser
  • NOx sensor errors
  • Complexity of EMS-S6 / EEC3 calibration on non-standard vessels

Reason:

  • Complex environmental system, sensitive to fuel quality and water temperature. When used in conditions of unstable power supply and without regular cleaning, errors and emergency stops occur.

2. DI09 — when used on generators and small boats

Problems:

  • Insufficient torque reserve at peak loads
  • Increased wear of PDE injectors
  • Sensitivity to overheating when the intercooler is clogged

Reason:

  • The engine runs well in moderate conditions, but suffers at high temperatures, poor maintenance and long loads at maximum power.

3. DI16 (early V8 versions with S6 EMS)

Problems:

  • Oil leaks along the head gasket and heat exchanger
  • Difficult to access camshafts and valves (expensive maintenance)
  • Errors in synchronizing EMS/EEC with the vessel's systems

Reason:

  • Powerful and reliable engines, but with improper installation or use of non-original filters/oils, critical components fail.

💥 Common causes of problems:

Cause / Consequences

  • ❌ Use of low-quality fuel. Coking of injectors, EGR, SCR
  • 💧 Humid marine environment. Short circuits in EMS, corrosion
  • 🛠 Lack of prevention. Premature wear of cylinder head, bearings
  • 🔌 Errors in the installation of CAN and control systems. Problems communicating with the panel, engine blocking
