Volvo D16 Engine Typical Malfunctions

1. Problems with the fuel injection system (Common Rail)

Symptoms: difficult starting, unstable operation, vibration, white/black smoke.

Causes: worn injectors, return leak, clogged filters.

Solution: diagnostics of the return drain, testing of injectors on a stand, replacement.

2. Wear of camshafts and rockers

Symptoms: extraneous noise in the cylinder head, loss of power, errors in the valve mechanism.

Causes: insufficient lubrication, low oil pressure, wear of guides.

Solution: checking the condition of the shafts during maintenance, replacing worn parts.

3. Problems with the turbine

Symptoms: whistling, loss of traction, increased oil consumption.

Causes: oil contamination, overheating, overspeeding.

Solution: cleaning/replacing the turbocharger, flushing the lubrication system.

4. EGR and DPF system malfunctions

Symptoms: Check Engine error, limited power, frequent regenerations.

Causes: dirty EGR valve, clogged diesel particulate filter.

Solution: forced regeneration, EGR cleaning, replacing DPF when worn out.

5. SCR (AdBlue) system

Symptoms: NOx sensor errors, reduced power, increased emissions.

Causes: low-quality reagent, sensor failure, dirty injector.

Solution: check sensors, flush the system, replace SCR units.

6. Oil/coolant leaks

Symptoms: drop in fluid level, overheating, oil stains.

Causes: worn gaskets, damaged radiator, cracks in the head.

Solution: identify and eliminate leaks, replace seals and pipes.

7. Generator and starter problems

Symptoms: poor starting, voltage drops, blown fuses.

Causes: aging electrical system, loose contacts, overloads.

Solution: check the condition of the wiring, terminals, repair/replace units.

🔧 How to extend the service life of D16:

  • Use original oils and filters
  • Conduct regular diagnostics and computer reading of errors (Tech Tool)
  • Avoid long driving in overload and overheating
