Common JR405E Transmission Failure Symptoms
1. Limp Home Mode (Fixed 3rd Gear)
-
The Symptom: The transmission stays in 3rd gear and will not shift up or down. Acceleration from a stop is very sluggish.
-
The Cause: This is a "fail-safe" mode triggered by the TCM (Transmission Control Module). It usually indicates an electronic failure, such as a faulty solenoid or a disconnected speed sensor.
-
The Fix: Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Common codes include P0751, P0756, or P0753.
2. Harsh Shifting (Shifting Shock)
-
The Symptom: When the transmission changes gears (especially from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd), there is a violent "thud" or "jerk."
-
The Cause: Often caused by a malfunctioning Line Pressure Control Solenoid (EPC) or a worn Valve Body that is no longer regulating hydraulic pressure correctly.
-
The Fix: Test the EPC solenoid resistance or inspect the valve body for scoring and wear.
3. Slipping and RPM Flare
-
The Symptom: While driving, the engine RPMs suddenly increase (flare) during a shift, but the vehicle doesn't speed up. It feels like the transmission is "slipping."
-
The Cause: Worn out Clutch Packs or hardened internal seals that allow hydraulic pressure to bleed off.
-
The Fix: Check fluid for a burnt smell and dark color. If burnt, a full rebuild is usually required.
4. Delayed Engagement
-
The Symptom: When moving the shifter from "Park" to "Drive" or "Reverse," it takes 2–5 seconds for the transmission to actually engage.
-
The Cause: Low fluid levels, a clogged internal filter, or a failing Oil Pump. It can also indicate that internal seals are becoming brittle.
-
The Fix: Change fluid and filter; if the problem persists, check line pressure.
5. Torque Converter Shudder
-
The Symptom: A vibration or "shudder" that feels like driving over rumble strips, typically occurring at constant speeds between 50–80 km/h when the lock-up clutch engages.
-
The Cause: Failing TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) Solenoid or contaminated fluid.
-
The Fix: Perform a full fluid flush with the correct Isuzu/Jatco spec fluid. If the shudder remains, the torque converter must be replaced.
Quick Diagnostic Chart
| Symptom | Likely Culprit | Repair Level |
| No Reverse | Low Reverse Clutch / D-Ring Seal | Major (Teardown) |
| Flashing "Check Trans" Light | Electronic Sensor/Solenoid | Minor (Diagnostic Scan) |
| Stuck in 3rd Gear | Electrical (Limp Mode) | Moderate (Solenoid Change) |
| Fluid Leaking from Bell Housing | Front Pump Seal | Major (Trans Removal) |
| Hard Downshift to 1st | Accumulator Piston / Valve Body | Moderate (Pan Drop) |
