Mercedes Sprinter 2006–2018 Common Problems

1. OM651 Engine Problems (4-cylinder diesel)

Injector Problems (early models): In the early years of the Sprinter W906 (2009–2010), problems with the Delphi piezoelectric injectors were widespread. They frequently failed, resulting in loss of power and engine malfunction. The manufacturer later replaced them with Bosch electromagnetic injectors.

Heat Exchanger (Oil Cooler): Oil leaks in the heat exchanger area (usually through gaskets) are a common problem.

Timing Chain: On OM651 engines, especially with high mileage and insufficient maintenance, the timing chain, located at the rear (flywheel side), can wear out, making replacement very labor-intensive and expensive.

2. Gearbox and Drivetrain Issues

Automatic Transmission (722.6 / NAG1): This generation's transmissions are reliable, but very sensitive to regular oil (ATF) and filter changes. Ignoring these changes can lead to vibrations and valve body failure.

Propeller Shaft: As with the T1N, wear of the driveshaft's center bearing or universal joints remains a common problem, resulting in vibration while driving.

3. Electrical and Electronic Issues

Corrosion in Connectors and Blocks: Water and dirt can penetrate electrical connectors and mounting blocks (fuses and relays), causing contact corrosion and erratic malfunctions of various systems.

ABS/ESP Sensors: Wheel speed sensors are still vulnerable to external factors; their failure activates the corresponding indicators.

Central locking issues: Door lock malfunctions are common, especially on cargo versions (due to intensive use), which may be related to wiring in the door bellows.

4. Environmental system issues

SCR (AdBlue) system: Models equipped with the AdBlue exhaust gas aftertreatment system often experience issues with NOx sensors, the AdBlue pump, or reagent crystallization in the system, which can lead to limited engine power (limp home mode).

Diesel particulate filter (DPF): When driven in urban traffic or on frequent short trips, the DPF quickly becomes clogged and requires forced regeneration or cleaning.

5. Bodywork issues

Corrosion: Although the Sprinter W906 is better protected than the T1N, corrosion remains a problem. The most vulnerable areas are the door edges, rear fenders, arches, and windshield frame.

Door Problems: Due to heavy loads and frequent use, the rollers and guides of the sliding door quickly wear out, which leads to jamming or distortion.
