Mercedes Sprinter 1st generation: Typical problems with wiring and electrical systems

1. ABS and ESP Sensor Issues

Corrosion and Contamination: Wheel speed sensors (ABS) and their wiring are very vulnerable to dirt, salt, and corrosion, especially on the rear axle.

ESP/ABS Malfunctions: Sensor failure causes the ABS and ESP warning lights on the instrument panel to illuminate, which can affect braking and handling.

Contact Oxidation: Sensor connectors are susceptible to oxidation, which causes erroneous signals to the control unit.

2. Wiring and Connector Issues

Wiring Harness Oxidation: Load and moisture cause oxidation of contacts in the main wiring harnesses, especially in the engine compartment and under the vehicle.

Taillight Wiring: A common problem is moisture getting into the taillights, which can corrode the bulb sockets and cause contact issues.

Door Wiring: Bends in the wires in the conduits between the body and the doors (especially sliding doors) can break or become damaged over time, causing malfunctions of the central locking system, windows, or speakers.

3. Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Associated Equipment Malfunctions

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: On diesel CDI engines (OM611, OM612), the MAF sensor often fails due to contamination, resulting in loss of power, poor acceleration, and black smoke.

Boost Pressure/Temperature Sensor Problems: Failure of these sensors also causes a loss of power and can lead to the activation of "limp home mode."

Relays and Fuses: Vibration and age can weaken the contacts of relays and fuses in the mounting blocks, causing erratic malfunctions of components (e.g., the fuel pump or fan).

4. Instrument Cluster and Immobilizer Problems

Immobilizer (SKREEM) Problems: The immobilizer or key system may malfunction, causing the engine to fail to start or stall immediately after starting.

Instrument Cluster Sensors: Malfunctions in the sensors associated with the instrument cluster (temperature, fuel level) can cause inaccurate readings, which may be due to poor wiring or a faulty instrument cluster itself.
